Privacy Policy

SpendWise ("we", "our", or "us") is a personal expense tracking application developed by Karthik Dasari. This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and how it is used and protected when you use the SpendWise mobile application.

      Summary: SpendWise does not sell, rent, or share your personal
      data with third parties for marketing. Your expense data is stored securely in
      your private Firebase account and is never shared without your explicit consent.
    

1. Information We Collect

We collect the following types of data to provide and improve our service:

Account information: Your email address and display name when you sign in via Google or email/password.
Expense data: Transaction records (title, amount, category, date, notes) that you manually enter or that are detected automatically.
SMS messages (Android only, optional): With your explicit permission, SpendWise reads incoming SMS messages to detect bank transaction alerts. Only messages matching financial patterns are processed; all other messages are ignored and never stored.
Notification content (Android only, optional): With your explicit permission, SpendWise listens for notifications from banking and UPI applications to detect transactions. No notification content is uploaded to our servers.
Usage analytics: Anonymous, aggregated data about which screens are viewed and how features are used (via Firebase Analytics). This data does not include any financial or personal content.

2. How We Use Your Information

To provide core expense tracking and reporting features.
To automatically detect and categorise bank transactions from SMS/notifications when you have enabled this feature.
To sync your data securely across devices via your Firebase account.
To authenticate your identity via Firebase Authentication.
To improve app performance and user experience through anonymous analytics.

3. Data Storage & Security

Your expense data is stored in Google Cloud Firestore under your authenticated user account. Access is restricted by Firebase Security Rules so that only you can read or write your data.

Sensitive local data (such as your PIN) is stored using encrypted secure storage on your device and is never transmitted to our servers.

We use industry-standard encryption (TLS/HTTPS) for all communication between the app and Firebase services.

4. SMS & Notification Permissions

The READ_SMS and RECEIVE_SMS permissions are optional and only requested when you enable the "Smart Detect" feature. These permissions are used exclusively to:

Read transaction-related SMS messages from banks and payment services.
Pre-fill expense details to save you time.

We do not read personal conversations or non-financial messages. Raw SMS content is never uploaded to our servers; only the parsed transaction data (amount, merchant, category) is saved to Firestore.

5. Third-Party Services

SpendWise uses the following third-party services, each governed by their own privacy policies:

Google Firebase – Authentication, database, and analytics
Google Sign-In – Optional OAuth sign-in

6. Data Retention & Deletion

Your data is retained for as long as your account is active. You can delete all your expense data at any time from Settings → Delete All Data inside the app. To permanently delete your account and all associated data, contact us at the email address below.

7. Children's Privacy

SpendWise is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will promptly delete it.

8. Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to:

Access the personal data we hold about you.
Request correction or deletion of your data.
Withdraw consent for optional permissions (SMS, notifications) at any time via device Settings.
Export your data (available via Firebase Console under your account).

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. Continued use of SpendWise after changes constitutes acceptance of the new policy.
